Residents and emergency services workers watch in shock after two young boys’ bodies were retrieved from a river in Mohlaletse village outside Jane Furse on Sunday after drowning.
MOHLALETSE – Limpopo SAPS have called on residents to ensure heightened safety of children after two young boys drowned in a river in Mohlaletse village outside Jane Furse on Sunday 05 November 2017.
L.t Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, Limpopo Provincial Police Spokesperson, said it was alleged that a group of young children were swimming in the river when the two deceased got stuck in the deep water and drowned.
Ngoepe said one of the boys from the group ran to the village for help and residents swiftly entered the water and retrieved the boys’ bodies in an effort to save their lives.
“Emergency services were summoned, however, upon arrival the boys were certified dead on the scene. The deceased were identified as 11 years-olds Tukelo Mahlanya and Morutthanyana Mahlanya,” explained Ngoepe.
Ngoepe added that as we are now in the rainy season, whereby dams and rivers were flowing, residents were encouraged to not allow young children to play or swim without close supervision from someone who can swim.
“This in order to prevent this type of incidents from occurring,” added Ngoepe.
He said police investigations were continuing on the matter.
